Washington Trust Community Rink To Open Friday, November 25 in Westerly

Westerly, Rhode Island... With the winter months and holiday season quickly approaching, Westerly-area residents can now look forward to enjoying a new resource – the Washington Trust Community Rink. After a year of planning, the downtown, outdoor skating center is preparing for its grand opening ceremony on Friday, November 25 at 4:30 p.m.

The new Washington Trust Community Rink will be located at 85 Main Street in downtown Westerly on land owned by the Westerly Land Trust and W.H. Properties, Inc. The capital investment for the rink was made by the Royce Family Fund, and the facility will be managed by the Ocean Community YMCA. Washington Trust, headquartered in Westerly since its founding in 1800, provided the funding to support its operation.

“We are excited to be a partner of this wonderful community initiative,” said Joseph J. MarcAurele, Washington Trust Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Downtown Westerly is a vibrant destination that will now offer even more activity thanks to the opening of the outdoor rink. It was an easy decision for Washington Trust to support this project and continue our dedication to the local community and area businesses.”

After its inaugural night, the Washington Trust Community Rink will remain open through March. The hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission will be $7 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Skate rentals will be offered for $4. Parking for the 12,000 square foot rink will be available in a lot located at the end of Commerce Street.

“The ice rink will add to the vitality of our wonderful downtown and build upon the existing sense of community here in Westerly”, said Kelly Presley, Executive Director of the Westerly Land Trust. “This effort ties directly to the mission of the Westerly Land Trust’s Urban Initiative and we are happy to provide the space for such a positive project that will draw residents and visitors downtown. We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such a dedicated team of partners who contributed to making the ice rink a reality.”

Charles M. Royce of the Royce Family Fund reiterated that the ice rink is consistent with the shared goal of the Land Trust and Fund to assist in the revitalization of downtown Westerly. “We have concentrated our Main Street effort to transform a previously nondescript entry to the Town to one which showcases its vitality as a great place to live, play, shop and dine. I am so pleased that The Washington Trust Company, the true anchor of the center of Westerly, has joined us in this endeavor.”

In addition to providing open skate for members of the community, the Washington Trust Community Rink will also offer skating lessons and be available for hockey, private parties, ice rental, and school use.

“The new skating center will benefit the entire community and help bring people to Westerly,” commented Maureen Fitzgerald, President of the Ocean Community YMCA. “We couldn’t be happier to see this community resource come to fruition thanks to help from the Royce Family Fund, Westerly Land Trust, the W.H. Properties, and Washington Trust. With 250 pairs of ice skates available, we’re hoping for a successful first season and would love to rent all of them on a daily basis.”

Anyone interested in learning more about the Washington Trust Community Rink, or requesting private use of the facility, is encouraged to call Tanner Evak of the Ocean Community YMCA at (401) 742-7563.
