During March and April, Washington Trust's "PB Xpress" campaign will be collecting peanut butter for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Why peanut butter? It's high in protein, loved by children and adults, and expensive for families in need.
Join us as we kick off our 11th Annual PB Xpress with the PB Xpress Sports Fun Day at Warwick Mall on Saturday, March 12th from Noon - 2:00 pm!

April 18th is almost here! That's right April 18th, not the 15th. We procrastinators will have three more days to delay filing our tax returns. That's because Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., will be celebrated on Friday April 15th this year. Therefore, you will have until the following Monday to file your tax returns. This new due date applies to filing returns, paying taxes, requesting an automatic six month extension, etc. Most states (including Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts) have adopted this extended due date.
If you still need more time when April 18th arrives, you can obtain the previously mentioned six month extension by filing U.S. Form 4868 and the appropriate state form. You will then have until October 17, 2011 to file your returns. However, this is an extension of time to file, but not to pay. If you owe any taxes, they must be paid no later than April 18th.
Although 2010 is over, there is still something you may be able to do that will decrease your tax liability for last year. If you're eligible, you can make a deductible contribution to an Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA). You have until April 18th of this year to do so, unless you're contributing to a SEP-IRA (mainly self-employed taxpayers). SEP-IRA contributions can be made up until October 17th if a filing extension is requested. Even if you are not eligible to make a deductible contribution to a traditional IRA, consider a Roth IRA contribution on or before April 18th. There are lots of benefits to using a Roth for your retirement needs.
On a similar note, eligible taxpayers also have until April 18th to make their 2010 deductible contribution to Health Savings Accounts.
Lastly, if you live in Rhode Island or other federally declared disaster areas and suffered damages from the severe flooding last March, you have the option of claiming your unreimbursed casualty losses on your 2010 return or on an amended 2009 return. Claiming these losses on an amended 2009 return may result in greater tax savings since they will not be subject to the 10% of AGI limitation and can be claimed whether or not you itemize deductions. However, you must amend your 2009 return no later than April 18, 2011.
