Rhode Island– On Earth Day, Sunday, April 22nd, more than 200 volunteers participated in the second annual Washington Trust Statewide Beach Cleanup at seven beaches across Southern Rhode Island. The Cleanup was a collective effort between Washington Trust and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

“The Rhode Island Division of Parks and Recreation thanks Washington Trust for their continued support of our State Parks, and celebration of Earth Day,” said Tom Rosa, Administrative Officer, Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. “These volunteers help maintain the beauty of our coastline and protect the most vulnerable and scenic areas of our beautiful State. We look forward to the continued partnership with this great effort.”

Teams of volunteers showed up to collect trash at Charlestown Breachway and East Beach in Charlestown, East Matunuck beach in South Kingstown, Misquamicut beach in Westerly, Fred Benson Town Beach on Block Island and Salty Brine and Scarborough beaches in Narragansett. Volunteers collected more than 115 bags of trash in preparation for the official opening of the State’s beaches in May.
