Tradition of Holiday Season Giving Continues

Westerly, RI – Each year during the holiday season, The Washington Trust Charitable Foundation presents $500 checks to food pantries located across the Southern New England communities in which the bank serves. This year, 19 checks were distributed, totaling $9,500 in donations.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 12.4 percent of Rhode Islanders (54,200 households) are food insecure, meaning they are often unsure where their next meal will come from due to a lack of resources. The Foundation’s contributions will help to fill that need again this winter.

“Washington Trust is committed to helping our neighbors in the communities in which we live and work,” said Edward O. Handy III, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Washington Trust. “We hope our support makes the holidays a bit brighter for those in need.”

The Washington Trust Charitable Foundation provided donations to assist the following local organizations:

  • Helping Hands of Block Island, Block Island, RI
  • Coventry Community Food Bank, Coventry, RI
  • Comprehensive Community Action, Cranston, RI
  • RICAN, Hope Valley, RI
