Business Spotlight: Ocean State Pickleball

Did you know pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America? According to USA Pickleball, the game was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities — are credited for creating the game. Pickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball, much like a Wiffle® ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racket sports: the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis.

Kara Biller, founder of Ocean State Pickleball, likes the sport because it appeals to all ages and skill levels, while providing a healthy and socially interactive environment for all. Founded in 2021, Ocean State Pickleball offers pickleball lessons, clinics, events, parties, corporate functions, round robins, leagues and tournaments and is certified with the Professional Pickleball Registry certified.
