Washington Trust Builds Affordable Housing With South County Habitat for Humanity
September 15, 2021
A team of Washington Trust mortgage specialists recently traded in their pens, paperwork, and calculators in favor of tape measures, hammers, and nails. In partnership with South County Habitat for Humanity, the team converged on an active construction site in Exeter, RI to help create the living space that will soon be home to a single mom with two young daughters.
South County Habitat for Humanity serves all cities and towns in Washington County, RI, and is committed to ensuring that everyone has a decent place to call home. The organization partners with hard working, low-income families to help them purchase brand new homes with affordable mortgage payments. The buyers are supported throughout the entire process, participating in courses and trainings to help them understand the homebuying process, improve their credit, learn about savings and budgeting, and more.
Volunteers are crucial for the organization, providing most of the labor required to build a house from the ground up. Some volunteers are retired and come to the build sites once a week, others are groups of friends who sign up to do something meaningful together once a month. And some, like the mortgage team from Washington Trust, are corporate groups who believe in and support the mission of the organization.
“Each day, our team works hard to ensure our customers have the best homebuying experience possible,” said Al Grant, Senior Vice President of Mortgage Origination at Washington Trust, “Working with South County Habitat For Humanity allowed us to take a step back and look at the meaning of homeownership through a different lens. We were reminded of why we are so passionate about helping our customers realize their dreams of homeownership. It was an honor to be a part of this build, and we are thrilled for the future homeowner and her family.”
Washington Trust is committed to supporting initiatives that help build and sustain healthy families, healthy finances, and healthy communities.
