Bank discusses its 225 year history in “American Roots: Stars, Stripes and Small Business Stories”

WESTERLY, R.I. — The Washington Trust Company (Washington Trust) is supporting the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce’s community series, “American Roots: Stars, Stripes and Small Business Stories,” with a guest lecture on the bank’s 225-year history by Executive Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and Director of Community Affairs Dennis Algiere.

The series celebrates the people, history and small businesses that have shaped the local community, as part of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The initiative highlights the enduring contributions of member organizations and their role in advancing both the regional and national economy.

As a platinum sponsor of the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce, Washington Trust was selected to participate in the series in recognition of its longstanding impact on the community and its distinction as the oldest community bank in the United States.

During the free public event at the Westerly Library, Algiere presented an engaging overview of Washington Trust’s 225-year history, discussing the bank’s founding, the challenges it has navigated across generations, and its contributions to the broader American story. He also shared historical anecdotes and insights that illustrated the institution’s evolution alongside the growth of the nation.

“Washington Trust’s story is deeply intertwined with the history of our community and our country,” said Algiere. “It was an honor to participate in this series and reflect on the resilience, innovation and commitment that have defined our organization for more than two centuries.”

The Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce created the series to highlight the legacy and continued influence of local businesses. Washington Trust’s participation underscores its ongoing commitment to community engagement and its role in supporting economic vitality in the region.
